Is the Cost of Lingual Braces Worth It?

Image of a metal lingual braces by Supersmile OrthodontistAre you wondering about the cost of dental braces and are interested in an aesthetic and less noticeable alternative to regular metal braces? If so, then you have probably heard about Incognito lingual braces. What exactly is it though and how does it work? Can you afford such braces and is it worth it? These are all perfectly good questions especially since cosmetic dental treatments almost always cost more than regular braces.

Dental experts often recommend “incognito” lingual braces to patients who are in need of dental alignment and overly concerned about how conventional metal braces might ruin their appearance. In any case, you would want to make sure that you can afford said braces and have a good understanding of how it works. Only then can you decide whether it is the right orthodontic treatment for you.

So are lingual braces worth it?

Lingual braces cost about $7500 (upper or lower arch) to $12,500 (full treatment) on average.  Most people would find it expensive even with dental insurance, but then again, you can say the same thing about regular metal braces which can cost up to $8000 on average. However, many would agree that lingual braces are well worth the added cost particularly if you are not too keen on having to wear metal braces for any length of time.

Lingual braces are kept out of sight as dentists fit them directly behind each tooth. Hence they are often called “braces behind teeth” as they are practically invisible to onlookers. Of course, you might be wondering – does this fact justify the high cost?

Fitting metal braces behind your teeth is not as easy as you might think. The procedure requires considerable skill, and dental experts fashion the braces from a more malleable gold-nickel alloy. Both factors contribute to the high cost of lingual braces.

Lingual braces are not your only option when it comes to “invisible braces”. Another alternative which is just as effective comes in the form of Invisalign braces. They differ from lingual braces as there are no wires or metal brackets present at all. Instead, dental experts make Invisalign braces out of a transparent material that goes over the teeth gradually shifting them to proper alignment.

The average cost of Invisalign braces is around $6000 to $9000 which makes it more affordable than lingual braces. However, treatment can take much longer which means more dental appointments. Also, while the fact that Invisalign braces are removable makes it more convenient, there is a chance that the latter may not work if you forget to wear it most of the day.
